Rachel watched the man she’d come to give more headspace than was healthy. His back was turned. The muscles in his jaw were working—she could see from this angle. He was toiling with thoughts, clearly. But, thoughts of what?

A flood of emotions threatened to break through the dam. Emotions about Michael that she hadn’t completely let go of. The anger, the betrayal. Emotions about her failure at getting samples and being jobless—and at this point, homeless, because she’d put everything into storage and was now living paycheck to paycheck. She could always go back to waiting tables, but she’d have to live in a car and…she didn’t have a car now! Shit just kept piling up.

Luke turned around, his face resolute. Whatever he’d decided, it looked like it’d taken a toll on him.

“Get dressed for a ride on that roan you seem to favor. Meet me at the mesa in two hours.”

Seconds later, she was alone in the visiting room and wondering if anything had happened at all.
